Sky Hopinka

The video, photography, and text-based works of Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) center personal positions of Indigenous homeland, landscape, and language as containers of culture expressed through personal, documentary, and nonfiction forms of media.

Hopinka’s recent exhibitions include Sky Hopinka: The sun comes in whenever it wants at LUMA in Arles, France (2022), Kicking the Clouds at Tanya Leighton in Los Angeles (2022), I’ll Remember You as You Were, not as What You’ll Become at the Museum of Modern Art (2021), and Sky Hopinka: Disfluencies at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (2020). His video work has played at various festivals including ImagineNATIVE Media + Arts Festival, Images, Wavelengths, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Sundance, Antimatter, Chicago Underground Film Festival, FLEXfest, and Projections. Recently a Guggenheim Fellow (2020) and Sundance Art of Nonfiction Fellow (2019), Hopinka co-curated the Flaherty Film Seminar (2022). He is currently assistant professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard’s Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts and is a co-founder of COUSIN, a collective supporting Indigenous artists expanding the form of film.

Based in Hudson, New York, Hopinka was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington, and spent several years in Palm Springs and Riverside, California; Portland; and Milwaukee.
