John Ratzloff was born at midnight in January on Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s birthday in Austin, Minnesota during a white out blizzard which shut that little town down for three days. That birth storm still permeates his bones and guides his path. His internal compass, at least when he is most happy, points due North.
In addition to his 19 year camera work on the White Earth Indian Reservation, John has tramped around, explored and played in northern Minnesota and Ontario with his old Hasselblad along with his blood brother and hearth-friend Peter Wahlstrom ever since they responded to the beckoning of the canoe to experience twenty-four consecutive years of paddling together until last year when John’s life fell apart for a time.
Happily, he has righted his spiritual compass and is back on his true path North, camera in hand and a smile on his face.
